RoM = (Value or Benefit / Time Spent)
Return on Minute, or RoM for short, is more than just a catchy acronym; it’s the key to unlocking the hidden means to your happiness. It’s a simple but powerful concept that helps us understand if we’re making the most of each minute we’re given or if there are areas where we can improve.
We spend half our waking hours at work, which makes our job an important part of life for most of us. What happens at work affects our personal life, and vice versa. So, if we feel happy in our job, it is very probable that we will also feel happy in life generally. Your life is made up of precious minutes so why not invest in making those minutes as meaningful as possible?
MEANING / MEAN-ING / NOUN
Feeling that you are spending your working life on something meaningful for yourself and others, and being able to see that your contribution in particular is of value.
What Research Says
Year after year, Danes are judged to be some of the happiest people in the world, and one of the explanations is that most of them enjoy going to work and feel a great sense of meaning in their job.
- Meaning is meaningful. According to a 2019 study by the Happiness Research Institute, they’re survey shows clearly that if a person feels a great sense of meaning in their work, they also feel a greater sense of happiness and contentment in life generally.
- The second most important factor to happiness is Mastery. The feeling of being able to master their job is of vital importance for Danes’ general sense of job satisfaction. Among other things, this survey shows that mastering has nearly as great an influence on job satisfaction as meaning.
- Balance has the third largest effect on job satisfaction. According to the study, your job satisfaction is affected by your perception of whether there is balance between the number of tasks you have and the amount of time you have to perform them. But you are always more than your job. So there also has to be balance between your working life and your personal life.
Bottom Line
Whether you’re Jeff Bezos or Jane Doe everyone is only given 24 hours a day. And if we’re lucky we wake up and get 24 more, then 24 more, and so on. But you never get to create more.
So, if you have only 24 hours to be the happiest you can be then why are you wasting that time doing anything else. Why are you not investing in creating meaning, mastery and balance in your life? Why aren’t you getting the highest Return on Minute you possibly can?
